Interior meets product design

"In sculpture, I am concerned primarily with space, form and the characteristics of metal.  In the chairs, many functional problems have to be satisfied first... but when you get right down to it, the chairs are studies in space, form and metal, too."  Harry Bertoia

The brief was to conduct a case study on a piece of furniture designed by a prominent designer, then to design a piece of furniture relating to this case study.

I chose the Diamond Chair by Harry Bertoia for its modernist 'form follows function' values as well as its airy, sculptural aesthetic quality.  Inspired by this, I made several chair models testing out different ways of designing something light, minimal and metallic,  incorporating seating materials by weaving in wool, ribbon and felt.  I ended up with a geometric chicken wire seat, which was made of metal yet had a soft, sunken quality.

The final part of the assignment was to create concept boards for two clients (in New Delhi and London), incorporating the designed piece of furniture
